P.S. again. I discovered that if I place my grid on the canvas by using thumb tacks on the frame edge side of the canvas where the canvas is stapled and string black thread back and forth to make the grid, there is no evidence of grid work on the canvas at all. I think it makes for a cleaner presentation. So, tit for tat on sharing.

Thanks for the comment about the thin tone. I had forgotten that first Dutch Masters step. It adds such depth that is needed for portraits. It will change my approach from just going for the gold to wait for it, wait for it, wait for it.

Carl -- If you were a foreign agent I would have to take you out of the game because you know too much! Didn't occur to me to photograph the work at an earlier stage than this -- guess I was in a hurry to get started painting! The only thing I must add to your observations is that I toned the canvas first pretty thinly, and then I put a grid in place, and then did the drawing. Fun challenge for everyone involved!

Thanks for sharing this work in progress. I can see your process. First, the drawing, then form, then background. Back to the face, then the body color in, then the breast area, then back to the face. Your next steps would be to finish the face, dress up the background, then the black dress, let it dry then place in the hair. A little shading here and there and the piece is finished. Magnificent.
